As a Civil Engineering student, I always like to keep an eye out on future opportunities in the field. I found this little job advert by Severn Trent which is particularly ironic!


The position would involve working within a team of Project Engineers involved in various types of Civil Engineering projects.

Current workload includes 16 Drainage Area Plans for Severn Trent Water, a number of Land Drainage Studies, Flood Risk Assessments, Feasibility Studies, private development Highway and Sewerage Design, Structural designs and supporting the Construction Division of company.

Drainage Area Plans involve the analysis of the sewerage system serving an area containing a population of up to 250,000 people. The sewerage system is analysed both structurally and hydraulically and the findings reported on to a specification supplied by the client. The structural analysis involves categorising each sewer length in line with the SRM and carrying out internal surveys of the sewers. The hydraulic analysis involves building a computer model and verifying it against real rainfall events then analysing the performance of the system against a specified procedure.


Severn Trent is the water company which is responsible for the Gloucestershire area, a part of Britain which was a couple of feet under water during the recently floods. I think its quite obvious to EVERYONE what the report for the sewage and drainage system will be like! LOL!



A Flood Risk Assessment report? Hmmm... Where should I start...

Woohoo!! Summer is here at last and it has certainly kicked off with a bang! Under a new law recently instated in Hong Kong, I'd have to go back every three years or face losing my full residence. Imagine being discriminated back in China! Any excuse for a holiday back there is fine by me! It all works out cheaper if I were to fly from London instead of Manchester so that could only mean a crazy weekend with F0bking in the capital city! Spent five days back there and had a nice chilled out time before jetting back to London and a coach back to Liverpool for my Summer job creating statistical models for water companies. Been in work for a week, it was challenging but a lot of fun and rewarding at the same time. With university on the pause for the next three months, it means that I get a lot more time to myself so I decided to return to the Habitat for Humanity project. The house have certainly progressed a lot while I was away! Now the roof tiles are all laid, majority of the outer walls were done and the inside walls were close to completion. Its amazing to see a home finally taking shape.

Under Tigzy's order, heres a little description of the house: The project is based on land donated by a Church Parish in Toxteth area (quite an infamous area in Liverpool for its ethnic population and race riot in the early 70s). The project is essentially aim to assist young people in the area to move from government housing and work towards owning a property of their own. This set basically consists of three houses. The one of the left will be occupied by a young African, a single mother and her 10 yrs old kid will move into the middle one while the one on the right will be taken up by a Caribbean couple. To reduce on the cost and skills required, the whole house minus the foundation is made out of wood. The main critical load bearing structures were erected under professionally supervision while the rest of the house were fitted by volunteers led by a contract manager. The people who will be owning these property will be buying them at a reduced rate but have to contribute towards "sweat equity". This means they will be directly contributing towards project by working on site to help with the construction. Its sweet to be working with the people who will be moving in and hearing about what they have planned for their house and their hopes and dreams for the future.

Its a shame I joined the project relatively late and hence couldn't see it from start to finish but there are more projects on the horizon so I might yet get to complete a full course of construction.





With a nice job to keep my occupied (and financed) through the summer, four festivals to go and this house to help build, I reckon this could possibly be the most stunning summer I have had yet!
